plywood boat longevity
From looking at these five boats, we can gain some insights about what promotes longevity in wood/epoxy composite boats. strip planking with cedar or mahogany covered with fiberglass inside and out is very successful. marine mahogany plywood works best. fir is good, but cover with at least 6 oz fiberglass to prevent checking. birch is ok above. Poor quality plywood. the main issue with using a non-marine plywood is the eternal problem of time. given sufficient time and use it may be that the protective fibreglass layer becomes damaged allowing water to permeate the surface and begin to rot the underlying plywood. if the plywood is required structurally then this becomes a messy problem indeed.. Plywood is one of the strongest and long-lasting materials used for house building and remodeling. many diy workers also prefer this wood because of its longevity. plywood is also affordable compared to many other kinds of wood. unfortunately, it is a known fact that exterior plywood is vulnerable to moisture.….
plywood boat longevity By meeting bs-1088 specifications, ohc’s marine grade plywood can be insured by lloyd’s of london. to build the best boats, the best quality marine grade plywood must be used. using a better grade will result in a higher value (including resale value), increased longevity of the boat, and a reduction in building time.. It can have up to 10 layers of thickness whereas regular plywood only has 3-5 layers. although marine plywood can survive the marine environment waterproofing, it will help in increasing its longevity. there are many ways to waterproof the boat, but i would recommend using a wooden sealant for waterproofing the plywood for the boat..
